Reproductive Rights
Chris Bishopp, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina House District 82, is endorsed by Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic. His position on abortion is direct: “Abortion is a medical procedure that should be solely a decision between a woman and her doctor, period.”
Protecting abortion access. Chris supports the right to a medically safe, legal abortion, including both procedural and medication abortion. He will oppose legislation that attempts to restrict a person’s ability to make their own reproductive health care decisions, including the decision to have an abortion. He supports efforts to repeal Senate Bill 20 and other medically unnecessary laws that restrict abortion access. He will oppose regulations on abortion providers that provide no medical benefit, such as surgical center licensing rules, hospital admitting privilege mandates, and building and staffing requirements. He will also oppose any legislation that disregards the medical evidence on the safety and effectiveness of mifepristone and medication abortion, including efforts to undermine its FDA approval.
Protecting birth control. Chris will oppose any effort to deny people insurance coverage for FDA-approved birth control.
Keeping care within reach. Chris will defend North Carolina’s 2023 Medicaid expansion and believes access to quality health care should never depend on your ZIP code. He will oppose any legislation that bars Planned Parenthood from serving Medicaid patients or from taking part in other publicly funded programs. He supports Planned Parenthood because it provides health care services that many people cannot afford or get anywhere else. Those services meet an urgent need that others want to restrict or eliminate, and Chris is against that.
Young people and families. Chris supports medically accurate, evidence-based, age-appropriate sex education. That includes information about abstinence and all FDA-approved birth control methods, taught by trained experts and covering consent. He will oppose all attempts to weaken or abolish teenagers’ current access to confidential care for mental health counseling, substance use, family planning, and STI diagnosis and treatment.
Equal treatment in health care. Chris believes every person deserves to be heard and represented regardless of race, religion, gender, ZIP code, or economic status. He will oppose all legislative attempts to discriminate against LGBTQ+ North Carolinians in health care, housing, employment, education, or athletics based on sexual orientation or gender identity. He will also support legislation to reduce racial disparities in reproductive health care and address systemic racism in health care for Black, Indigenous, people of color, and immigrant communities.
Standing up publicly. Chris has committed to speaking out publicly in support of reproductive health care and using his influence in Raleigh to pass legislation that protects access and defeat legislation that limits it.
